‘Charitable Giving’ is Greendale’s new charitable giving scheme. Every 12 months our Charitable Giving Committee selects up to six community groups or charities to help. We will work with each of our chosen charities throughout the year to determine how we can best provide support to them including, but not limited to, making donations, participating in fundraising activities, providing equipment or other support, or volunteering. We also encourage colleagues to volunteer their time and expertise to support these programmes. Organisations eligible for the Community Giving scheme include charities, schools and relevant community groups. Our committee will consider any requests submitted and every year the Charitable Giving Committee will choose new organisations to support for the next 12 months. If you're involved with an eligible organisation and you would like it to be considered for our Charitable Giving scheme, please complete the nomination form below.

EXETER FOOD ACTION

We are proud to be supporting Exeter Food Action who work in partnership with Fareshare South West to fight hunger and food waste in our part of Devon. Exeter Food Action rescues excess food from our shelves, and redistributes it to charity organisations that feed people in Exeter. All food received from Greendale is donated to organisations that support more vulnerable people in Exeter, including those affected by hunger, homelessness, family breakdown, low incomes, poverty, benefit uncertainty, abuse, poor nutrition and those receiving palliative care. Food is shared with soup kitchens, hostels, food banks, community cafés, schools, hospices, and others. Any group can access Exeter Food Action food as long as they are local, and do not make a profit from the sale of the food. Food is not resold or given to individuals. Every year, Exeter Food Action rescue over 30 tonnes of food, and save the groups that receive it over £80,000. The food rescued from Greendale might have been disposed because it has a short date left on it, be in damaged packaging, or might simply be surplus to requirements. If any food is unusable, Exeter Food Action compost it if possible and share it with a local allotment collective. For further information and to donate click the button below.

Exeter Food Action has been working with Greendale for some time now, helping to redistribute excess food to organisations that feed people in and around Exeter. This has been a hugely positive relationship, and we’re now DELIGHTED to have been chosen as one of Greendale’s official charities for the next 12 months. Many thanks to them for their brilliant support!

FISHING FOR LITTER

What they do: Fishing for Litter is one of the most innovative and successful projects to tackle marine litter. This simple initiative aims to reduce litter at sea by engaging one of the key stakeholders, the fishing industry. It raises awareness of marine litter within the fishing industry, local communities and with school children. The idea is simple; participating vessels are given hardwearing bags in which to collect any marine litter caught in their fishing gear during normal fishing activity. Filled bags are deposited on the quayside and staff at participating harbours then move the bags to dedicated skips for monitoring, collection and disposal. Skips are kept locked to prevent misuse.

RNLI

What they do: The Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) is the UK’s largest independent charity dedicated to saving lives at sea. There are 238 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland; all of them provide a 24-hour search and rescue service, with the boats crewed by trained volunteers who will risk their lives time and again to save others’. Funded almost entirely by donations, and 95% staffed by volunteers, the Institute is vital to the safety of yachtsmen, fishermen, beach-goers and anyone who uses the sea.
